Chess club wins ‘Best School Performance’ for the 3rd time running!

Posted: 28th April 2025

Chess fever is taking over at Kew College Prep! Just before the Easter break, the 14th Desert Penguins Junior Chess Championships took place and 16 of our most enthusiastic chess players took part. The children had great fun and achieved some fantastic results, playing against 120 children from all over London!

It’s wonderful to see so many Kew College Prep children enjoying playing chess and attending these championships. We have regular after school chess clubs available to children from Reception upwards, catering to beginners and experienced players, and the children make great progress as well as having fun with their friends! Learning to play chess is fantastic for developing problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making skills. Additionally, chess can improve concentration, creativity, and self-confidence while promoting social skills and sportsmanship!

At the most recent Desert Penguins Junior Chess Championships, Kew College Prep children played in 4 different age groups: Boys Under 8 years old, Boys Under 10 years old, Boys Under 12 years old and Girls Under 12 years old. Some of the highlights from a very successful day were achieving 2nd Place in the Boys Under 8, 4th place in the Boys Under 10, 9th place in the Boys Under 8s, 12th in the Boys Under 8, 3rd in the Girls Under 12 and 2nd in the Girls Under 10! With this dominant performance, Kew College Prep won for the 3RD CONSECUTIVE TIME the award for BEST SCHOOL PERFORMANCE! It was a great experience for all the children and everyone received a trophy!

Chess is just one of the after school clubs on offer at Kew College Prep. To find out more about our co-curricular clubs, visit our Infant House or Junior House clubs pages. We make sure there are new clubs regularly and that these cater to a range of interests from sports and music, to arts and crafts to board games and Harry Potter! There really is something for everyone, starting from our Pre-Prep children in Reception and Year 1, all the way up to Year 6!
